The benefits of polarised lenses for sunglasses

The benefits of polarised lenses for sunglasses

Sunglasses provide excellent protection against harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, filtering out 99-100% of damaging rays, but have you also come across polarised sunglasses? Our opticians on Duke Street reveal exactly what polarised lenses are and how they might benefit you.

What are polarised lenses?

Polarised lenses are designed to combat the effect of bright glare. When sunlight reflects off water, snow, wet roads and other shiny, flat surfaces, light is scattered horizontally back into your eyes, which is called glare. This can cause you to lose clarity, make you squint, experience eye strain, and obstruct your vision, even with regular sunglasses on.

Non-polarised and polarised sunglasses still have UV protection lenses; however, polarisation technology also eliminates glare, offering you greater comfort and sharper vision.

How do polarised lenses work?

To counter the horizontal rays of light, polarised lenses utilise a clever technology that only allows vertical rays of light through - much like vertical blinds on a window but on a much smaller scale. By eliminating glare, your eyes can view the surroundings with increased contrast and enable you to focus without distraction.

Are polarised lenses worth it?

Polarised lenses have immediate benefits if you spend a considerable amount of time outdoors. They’re incredibly popular for those engaging sports such as skiing, snowboarding, sailing, fishing, cycling and golf, as you can then see any obstacles, and perceive depth even better on reflective surfaces like snow, the golf green, water, or roads.

Those who spend long days driving might also benefit from wearing polarised sunglasses, although it’s important to note that they can prevent you from seeing LCD displays correctly, so it’s a good idea to check your dashboard to see how everything looks first.

To summarise, the immediate benefits are:

     eliminating glare and reflection

     clearer, sharper vision

     increased colour contrast

     improved depth perception

     less squinting and eye strain
